What's Happening?
The ACT Government has announced the 2025 Maternity in Focus Workforce Scholarship Scheme, offering $50,000 in funding to enhance the skills of maternity care professionals in Canberra. The scholarships,
up to $6,750 per person, are available to midwives, doctors, nurses, and allied health staff involved in maternity care. The initiative aims to support professional development in areas such as breastfeeding education, perinatal mental health, and culturally appropriate care. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith emphasized the importance of investing in the maternity workforce to improve health outcomes for families.
Why It's Important?
This scholarship scheme is a strategic move to address the growing demand for skilled maternity care professionals in Canberra. By investing in the education and development of healthcare workers, the ACT Government aims to ensure high-quality, person-centered maternity care. This initiative not only helps retain experienced professionals but also attracts new talent to the field, contributing to a sustainable healthcare system. The focus on culturally appropriate and trauma-informed care is particularly significant in providing inclusive and sensitive healthcare services.
What's Next?
Applications for the scholarships are open until February 13, 2026. Eligible professionals are encouraged to apply to take advantage of this opportunity for career advancement. The ACT Government will continue to monitor the impact of the scholarships on the maternity workforce and may consider expanding the program based on its success. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reform the maternity care system in Canberra, aligning with the Maternity in Focus: First Action Plan 2022-2025.
