What's Happening?
In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup, a public art initiative titled 'Art of the Game' has been launched across New York City and New Jersey. This project features 23 large-scale soccer ball sculptures created by internationally recognized artists. These
sculptures are strategically placed in prominent locations such as major streets, parks, museums, and watch party venues across all five boroughs and New Jersey. The initiative is organized by ARTS 14C and the FIFA World Cup 2026 New York/New Jersey Host Committee. The sculptures will be on display through Labor Day, with 12 pieces set for permanent installation and five to be auctioned for charity through Christie’s. The project was supported by the late philanthropist Agnes Gund, who helped connect organizers with leading museums.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the intersection of art and sports, aiming to enhance cultural engagement during the FIFA World Cup. By placing art in public spaces, the project seeks to make art accessible to a broader audience, fostering community spirit and cultural appreciation. The auctioning of select sculptures for charity also underscores the philanthropic aspect of the initiative, potentially raising significant funds for various causes. The project not only celebrates the global event but also aims to leave a lasting cultural legacy in the region, reflecting the diversity and energy of New York and New Jersey.
What's Next?
As the World Cup progresses, these sculptures will serve as focal points for community gatherings and celebrations. The auction of select pieces will take place, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and ARTS 14C. The permanent installations will continue to enrich public spaces long after the World Cup concludes, contributing to the cultural landscape of the region. The initiative may inspire similar projects in other host cities, promoting the integration of art and sports on a global scale.
