What's Happening?
Grand Canyon University (GCU) has partnered with McCarthy Building Companies to create a pre-apprenticeship pathway aimed at addressing the labor shortage in the construction industry. The program, announced by GCU’s Center for Workforce Development, will offer courses in civil construction, mechanical/plumbing, concrete, and HVAC. The initiative is designed to introduce students to various career paths in construction, providing them with the skills needed to enter the workforce. The program is set to begin with civil construction and mechanical/plumbing courses this fall, with additional courses launching in 2026. McCarthy Building Companies is supporting the program by providing scholarships and faculty resources.
Why It's Important?
The construction industry in Arizona is experiencing significant growth, leading to a high demand for skilled workers. This program addresses the industry's labor gap by preparing students for careers in construction, thereby supporting the state's economic development. The partnership between GCU and McCarthy Building Companies is a strategic move to cultivate a skilled workforce from the ground up, ensuring that the industry can meet future demands. By offering financial support and educational resources, the program provides students with opportunities to advance into well-paying jobs, potentially elevating their socioeconomic status.
What's Next?
The program is awaiting curriculum approval from the U.S. Department of Education, after which it will transition from a 'pathway' to a 'program,' making students eligible for federal financial aid. As the program develops, it is expected to expand its reach, attracting more students and potentially influencing similar initiatives in other regions. McCarthy Building Companies plans to integrate successful graduates into their workforce, providing a direct pipeline of skilled labor. The program's success could serve as a model for addressing labor shortages in other industries.
