The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced a delay in the opening of a specific section of the Salmon River for fishing due to critically low water levels. This decision impacts the lower fly fishing section, which
runs from the Route 52 bridge in Altmar up to the Salmon River Fish Hatchery property boundary. The delay is a direct consequence of below-average rainfall during the summer, which has resulted in declining water levels in the Salmon River Reservoir. Under normal circumstances, seasonal baseflows in the Salmon River are increased on September 1st. However, current reservoir levels are below the critical threshold required for this increase, and no significant precipitation is forecasted. The DEC is concerned that prematurely increasing water flows would prompt Chinook salmon, currently staging in Lake Ontario, to begin their spawning migration into the river.
