What's Happening?
Cornwall Wildlife Trust is initiating a temperate rainforest restoration project near Looe, funded by donations exceeding £67,000. The 150-acre site at Muchlarnick is deemed ideal due to its humid valleys and diverse species. The project, supported by Aviva, involves planting 30,000 trees over 50 years. Local communities and schools will participate, benefiting from increased access to nature and educational opportunities. The restoration aims to provide cleaner air, water, and reduced flood risks.
Why It's Important?
The restoration of temperate rainforests in Cornwall is crucial for biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation. These rare ecosystems offer vital habitats for wildlife and serve as carbon sinks, helping mitigate climate change. The project fosters community engagement, providing educational and volunteering opportunities that enhance environmental awareness. By restoring these habitats, the initiative contributes to ecological resilience, reducing threats from extreme weather and promoting sustainable land management practices.
