What's Happening?
The University of Dayton (UD) is reaffirming its Catholic, Marianist commitment to fostering an inclusive campus community with the launch of its second Flyers Plan for Community Excellence. This initiative builds upon an initial strategic plan from 2020
and insights from a 2023 campus climate survey. According to Tiffany Taylor, vice president for diversity and inclusion, the new plan aims to cultivate an excellent climate where faculty, staff, and students feel valued and connected. Key components include inclusive professional and leadership development, regular performance evaluations, and participation in climate assessments for faculty and staff. The plan also focuses on advancing student knowledge and respect for diversity through classroom learning, residential experiences, and co-curricular activities, supported by a revisioning of 'Commitment to Community' and a new civic preparedness and dialogue initiative.
Why It's Important?
This renewed commitment to community excellence is vital for the University of Dayton as it addresses the evolving needs of a diverse academic environment. By prioritizing inclusivity and a sense of belonging, UD aims to enhance the overall educational experience and professional development for all members of its community. This initiative can lead to a more engaged and productive campus, fostering an environment where different perspectives are valued and contribute to innovation. For students, it means being prepared to live and work in a diverse world, while for faculty and staff, it ensures a supportive and equitable workplace. The plan's focus on civic preparedness also aligns with broader societal needs for informed and engaged citizens.
What's Next?
Tiffany Taylor is inviting the campus community to engage in discussions about the plan's advancement, with conversations to be produced as podcasts. She will also host fireside chats in the Dialogue Zone in Roesch Library. These initiatives are designed to gather feedback and ensure broad participation in the plan's implementation. The revisioning of 'Commitment to Community' and the launch of the civic preparedness and dialogue initiative will further integrate the plan's objectives into the daily life of the university. The ongoing efforts will aim to continuously assess and improve the campus climate, ensuring that UD remains a welcoming and inclusive institution.
Beyond the Headlines
The University of Dayton's Flyers Plan for Community Excellence reflects a broader trend in higher education institutions across the U.S. to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This initiative goes beyond mere compliance, aiming to embed these values into the core fabric of the university's identity and operations. The emphasis on dialogue and community engagement suggests a proactive approach to fostering understanding and resolving potential conflicts. This commitment can serve as a model for other institutions, demonstrating how a values-driven approach can lead to a more cohesive and enriching academic environment, ultimately preparing graduates for leadership in a complex and diverse world.
