What's Happening?
Spokane is enhancing its medical residency programs to address the growing demand for healthcare professionals. The Providence/Sacred Heart psychiatry residency program is expanding from four to six residents annually, supported by federal funding aimed
at underserved areas. Dr. Rebecca Mallo, the chief medical officer for Providence in Spokane, highlighted the increasing need for psychiatry due to rising mental health challenges. Additionally, MultiCare is launching a new internal medicine residency program at Deaconess Hospital, supported by a $500,000 Washington state grant. This program aims to address the shortage of primary care physicians in the Inland Northwest, with plans to grow to 24 residents over three years.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of residency programs in Spokane is crucial for addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in psychiatry and primary care. With an aging population of physicians nearing retirement, these programs are essential for ensuring continued access to healthcare services. The initiatives also aim to retain local talent, as many residents have ties to the region and are likely to stay post-training. This development is a step towards mitigating the healthcare workforce gap, which is vital for maintaining public health and meeting the community's needs.
What's Next?
The expanded residency programs are expected to begin seeing patients soon, with MultiCare's internal medicine program starting in April 2026. The first class of residents will begin training in June 2027. As these programs grow, they will contribute to a more robust healthcare system in Spokane, potentially inspiring similar expansions in other regions facing healthcare shortages. Continued support from government and healthcare organizations will be critical to sustain and further develop these initiatives.
