What's Happening?
NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland is inviting applications for its 2026 High School Engineering Institute, a summer program aimed at preparing high school juniors and seniors for careers in the aerospace industry. The program, which will take
place in July, offers a hands-on learning experience where students will engage with NASA's mission content and collaborate with technical experts. Participants will explore engineering design processes and develop solutions to real-world challenges, such as noise pollution reduction and smart power systems for space stations. Applications are open from March 20 to May 1, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by NASA Glenn is significant as it provides young students with early exposure to STEM fields, particularly aerospace engineering, which is crucial for fostering the next generation of scientists and engineers. By engaging students in practical problem-solving and innovation, the program helps build a skilled workforce that can contribute to future technological advancements and maintain the U.S.'s leadership in space exploration. The program also supports educational equity by offering opportunities to students who meet the eligibility criteria, potentially inspiring a diverse group of future STEM professionals.
What's Next?
Selected students will participate in one of three weeklong sessions in July 2026. The program will continue to accept applications until May 1, 2026, and interested students must ensure they meet the eligibility requirements, including a minimum GPA and U.S. citizenship. As the program progresses, NASA Glenn may evaluate its impact on participants' academic and career trajectories, potentially expanding or adapting the program based on feedback and outcomes.
