What's Happening?
Thames Water has initiated a £5.7 billion tender process to find a main contractor for the construction of a new reservoir in Oxfordshire, known as the White Horse Reservoir. This project is part of a national
initiative to enhance long-term water resilience and support housing development in the South East of England. The reservoir is designed to have a capacity of 150 billion liters and will supply water to Thames Water, Southern Water, and Affinity Water customers. The project is expected to be completed by 2040 and will include additional infrastructure such as a water treatment works and transfer pipeline.
Why It's Important?
The development of the White Horse Reservoir is a critical infrastructure project aimed at addressing water scarcity and supporting population growth in the South East. By increasing water storage capacity, the project will help ensure a reliable water supply for millions of residents and businesses in the region. The initiative also reflects broader efforts to improve water management and sustainability in response to climate change and increasing demand. The project is expected to create significant employment opportunities, with an estimated 1,800 construction jobs, and contribute to the local economy.
What's Next?
Interested contractors have until April 24 to submit their bids, with shortlisted firms invited to tender later in 2026. An online briefing for applicants is scheduled for February 11. Thames Water plans to submit a development consent order application for the reservoir this year, with the aim of appointing an infrastructure provider by 2029. The project will also include leisure and ecological features, enhancing community engagement and environmental benefits. As the project progresses, stakeholders will be monitoring its impact on regional water management and infrastructure development.
