What's Happening?
The San Jose Sharks Foundation has announced the continuation of its Goals for Kids program for the 2025-26 NHL season. This initiative, now in its 12th year, pledges to donate $1,000 for every goal scored by the Sharks during the regular season. The funds will be directed to nonprofit organizations that focus on youth education, wellness, and access to hockey. Last season, the Sharks scored 208 goals, resulting in $208,000 distributed to seven local nonprofits. Since its inception in 2014, the program has contributed over $2.6 million, impacting more than 1.3 million lives. The program is supported by Taube Philanthropies, SAP, Tech CU, Swenson Foundation, and Credo. This season, the Sharks Foundation has updated its mission to empower youth through education and wellness while advancing equitable access to hockey. The 2025-26 grantees include Access Books Bay Area, Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, KABOOM!, One Step Beyond, Inc., and Sunnyvale Community Services.
Why It's Important?
The Goals for Kids program plays a significant role in supporting community initiatives that focus on youth development and wellness. By linking sports performance to charitable contributions, the program not only incentivizes the team but also fosters community engagement and support. The financial contributions help sustain vital programs that provide educational resources, wellness activities, and access to sports for underserved youth. This initiative highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility and the positive impact sports organizations can have on their communities. The program's success over the years underscores the potential for sports teams to drive social change and support local nonprofits in meaningful ways.
What's Next?
As the 2025-26 NHL season progresses, the Sharks Foundation will continue to monitor the number of goals scored and distribute funds accordingly. Fans will have the opportunity to contribute directly through the purchase of the inaugural Goals for Kids 'goal celebration' bobblehead, which features last season's top goal scorers and plays the SAP Center goal horn. These collectibles will be available online and at Sharks home games, with proceeds benefiting the Foundation's programs. The ongoing engagement with fans and the community is expected to enhance the program's reach and impact, further supporting the Foundation's mission.
Beyond the Headlines
The Goals for Kids program not only provides financial support but also raises awareness about the importance of youth education and wellness. By integrating community support into the fabric of the team's operations, the Sharks Foundation sets a precedent for other sports organizations to follow. The program's emphasis on equitable access to hockey also addresses broader issues of inclusivity and diversity in sports, encouraging participation from all backgrounds. This initiative reflects a growing trend in sports philanthropy, where teams leverage their influence to drive positive social outcomes.
