In Los Cortijos, Spain, African migrants are revitalizing the ancient trade of shepherding, addressing labor shortages in rural areas. Osam Abdulmumen, a Sudanese migrant, is among those trained through
a government program to work as shepherds, filling a gap left by the rural exodus of Spaniards. The program, funded by the regional government, has trained 460 students, mostly migrants, since 2022. This initiative not only provides employment for migrants but also sustains local agricultural practices, crucial for producing Spain's renowned sheep's milk cheese.
