What's Happening?
The ASEAN Foundation has initiated the Scam Ready ASEAN program to address the growing issue of online scams and digital fraud in Southeast Asia. This regional initiative aims to equip 3 million people across all 11 ASEAN Member States with the skills
to recognize and prevent online scams, including those enabled by artificial intelligence. The program will involve 20 local partner organizations and mobilize 2,000 Master Trainers to reach over 550,000 learners. It will also advance public awareness through digital campaigns and educational resources. The initiative includes three Regional Convenings to facilitate knowledge exchange among governments, industry, civil society, academia, and development partners.
Why It's Important?
The Scam Ready ASEAN initiative is crucial as it addresses the increasing threat of digital fraud, which has become more sophisticated with advancements in technology. By educating millions across the region, the program aims to build community resilience against these threats. This is particularly important as digital fraud can have significant financial and personal impacts on individuals and businesses. The initiative also fosters regional cooperation, which is essential for effectively combating cross-border scams. By enhancing digital literacy and awareness, the program supports the broader goal of promoting safe and secure digital environments in Southeast Asia.
What's Next?
The ASEAN Foundation will engage a Media Engagement Agency to support the program's communications and media visibility. This will help amplify key messages and increase public awareness. The initiative will continue to develop and distribute educational resources and conduct regional convenings to share best practices and strengthen cooperation. The program is set to run until December 2027, with ongoing efforts to position Scam Ready ASEAN as a leading initiative in online scam prevention.
