What's Happening?
The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol has released new guidance on land sector emissions and carbon removals, marking a significant advancement for organizations dealing with land-based emissions. This guidance, released in June 2026, builds on the Land Sector
and Removals Standard (LSRS) published earlier in January 2026. It aims to provide clarity and practical direction for companies, especially those involved in food systems, forestry, or land-intensive supply chains, to navigate the complexities of land-based emissions and carbon removals. The guidance addresses the need for consistent and transparent reporting, setting expectations for credible use of removals within corporate climate strategies. This development comes at a time when scrutiny on climate claims is increasing, and stakeholders demand more reliable data and methodologies.
Why It's Important?
The release of this guidance is crucial as it supports organizations in implementing credible, evidence-based actions towards Net Zero strategies. With land use, agriculture, and carbon removals being central to many Net Zero strategies, the guidance helps companies account for land-based emissions and removals more consistently. This is particularly important for businesses with significant exposure to land-intensive supply chains, as it aids in aligning corporate goals with evolving best practices. The guidance also helps address the growing demand for transparency and accountability in climate claims, which is essential for maintaining stakeholder trust and meeting regulatory requirements.
What's Next?
To assist organizations in understanding and applying the new guidance, the Carbon Trust is hosting an interactive webinar titled 'New Land Sector Removals Guidance: Ask our experts'. This session will provide an overview of the guidance updates, explore practical implications for organizations, and offer a platform for participants to engage with specialists through a live Q&A. This initiative aims to help businesses translate the guidance into actionable steps that align with their corporate goals and the latest best practices in sustainability.
