What's Happening?
China has successfully connected its indigenously built Hualong One nuclear reactor to the grid in Hainan province. This marks a significant milestone as the reactor prepares for commercial operations. Developed by the China General Nuclear Power Group
and the China National Nuclear Corporation, the reactor features advanced safety and digital management systems. It is part of China's broader strategy to meet its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2060. The Hualong One reactor, a Generation III nuclear reactor, is designed to produce an electric power output of approximately 1,170 to 1,200 megawatts. The reactor is part of the Phase II Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant, which will generate 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually once fully operational.
