What's Happening?
The New Afton Mine, operated by Canadian mining company New Gold, has initiated a significant digital transformation by deploying an advanced LTE and 5G network. This initiative, executed by Ambra Solutions, aims to improve efficiency, safety, and automation
in one of the world's most complex mining environments. Located near Kamloops, British Columbia, the mine produced 63,000 ounces of gold and 50 million pounds of copper in 2025. The deployment, which began in March 2024, is structured in three phases: implementing LTE-powered remote operations in the C-Zone, expanding underground LTE coverage, and enhancing surface communication. This transformation addresses challenges such as high-precision geolocation for mineral tracking and integrating advanced wireless systems with existing infrastructure. The project enables remote operation of vehicles, enhancing safety and productivity, and supports seamless communication among workers.
Why It's Important?
The deployment of a 5G network at New Afton Mine represents a significant advancement in mining technology, setting a new standard for digital transformation in the industry. By enabling remote operations, the initiative enhances worker safety by reducing the need for miners to travel to the deepest parts of the mine. This not only improves safety but also increases operational efficiency. The advanced connectivity allows for real-time geolocation and network monitoring, ensuring reliable and secure operations. The initiative serves as a model for other mining operations, demonstrating how technology can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage in a demanding industry. The integration of predictive analytics and automation further positions New Afton as a leader in mining innovation.
What's Next?
As the deployment progresses, New Afton Mine is expected to continue optimizing its operations through the use of predictive analytics and comprehensive asset tracking. The successful implementation of this technology could lead to broader adoption across the mining industry, influencing how mines operate globally. Stakeholders, including other mining companies and technology providers, may closely monitor the outcomes of this initiative to assess its scalability and potential benefits. The focus on cybersecurity measures will also be crucial in maintaining data integrity and operational security as the mine continues to integrate more advanced technologies.
