What's Happening?
The inaugural African Film Investor Roundtable (IFIR) took place in Cape Town, gathering top film investors and financiers involved in Africa's creative industries. The event, held from July 21 to 23, was spearheaded by Steven Markovitz, CEO of Big World
Cinema, and Wakiuru Njuguna, Managing Partner of HEVA Fund. The roundtable aimed to bring together investors who recognize African film as an investable asset class and to foster collaboration across the capital continuum. Participants included representatives from major foundations and individual investors, alongside experts who led sessions on de-risking the film value chain and intellectual property finance in Africa. The event also featured project pitches from producers who had completed the African Producers Accelerator program.
Why It's Important?
The roundtable signifies a pivotal moment for African cinema, highlighting increased global recognition and investment in the continent's film industry. By bringing together key stakeholders, the event aims to strengthen the financial infrastructure supporting African filmmakers, potentially leading to more diverse and authentic storytelling from the region. This could enhance the global cultural landscape and provide economic opportunities within Africa's creative sectors. The involvement of international investors and experts underscores the growing interest in African cinema as a viable and profitable industry.
What's Next?
The next African Film Investor Roundtable is scheduled to take place in Lagos in November 2026, during the CANEX WKND event. This gathering will continue to build on the momentum generated in Cape Town, offering further networking and business opportunities for creatives, investors, and industry leaders from Africa and its diaspora. The ongoing collaboration and investment are expected to drive the development of new film projects and strengthen the continent's position in the global film industry.
