What's Happening?
The St. Louis Blues have partnered with the Edwardsville Tigers Hockey Club for the third year of the Hockey Fights Cancer Challenge. This initiative involves the Tigers playing nine exhibition games against St. Louis area Mid-States teams to raise funds for cancer research. The series kicks off with the 'Clash of the Cats' game against the Oakville Tigers on October 10. Proceeds will benefit the Blues for Kids' Hockey Fights Cancer efforts, aiming to raise over $100,000 for a cancer research grant at Siteman Cancer Center through the V Foundation. Last season, the challenge raised over $50,000 and recognized more than 25 individuals affected by cancer.
Why It's Important?
This partnership highlights the role of sports organizations in community engagement and philanthropy. By leveraging their platform, the St. Louis Blues and Edwardsville Tigers are raising significant funds for cancer research, which could lead to advancements in treatment and support for those affected by the disease. The initiative also fosters community spirit and awareness, encouraging participation from local teams and fans. The involvement of young fans, like 11-year-old Brody Sedlacek, who overcame cancer, underscores the personal impact and inspiration such events can provide.
What's Next?
The series of games will continue through January, with each match contributing to the fundraising goal. The success of this initiative could inspire similar collaborations between sports teams and charitable organizations, potentially expanding the reach and impact of such efforts. The ongoing support from the St. Louis Blues, including increased promotions, suggests a growing commitment to community causes.
