What's Happening?
The European Commission has presented a new cybersecurity package aimed at strengthening the EU's resilience to cyber and hybrid attacks. The package focuses on reducing risks from high-risk suppliers outside the EU, particularly in critical infrastructure
like mobile networks. The measures are part of a common and risk-based framework to protect sensitive parts of the EU's IT ecosystem. The package requires approval from the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers, after which member states will have one year to implement the changes in their national legislation.
Why It's Important?
The cybersecurity package reflects the EU's proactive approach to addressing vulnerabilities in its IT infrastructure. By targeting high-risk suppliers, the EU aims to safeguard its critical sectors from potential cyber threats. The measures could enhance the security of mobile networks and other essential services, reducing the risk of disruptions and data breaches. The package also underscores the importance of international cooperation in cybersecurity, as threats often transcend national borders. The initiative may lead to increased scrutiny of suppliers and improved security standards across the EU.
