A new peer-reviewed study has identified over 1,200 chemicals in food-contact materials that pose serious health risks, including cancer and reproductive harm. The research, led by the nonprofit Food Packaging Forum Foundation, also found that information
is lacking for 87% of the more than 15,000 chemicals used in food processing or packaging, making it impossible to assess their risks. The study categorized 1,222 hazardous chemicals into four tiers based on evidence of human exposure, with 94 chemicals in Tier 1, indicating the highest priority for regulatory action. These Tier 1 chemicals, detected in human samples like breast milk and blood, include PFAS 'forever chemicals,' styrene, phthalates, and bisphenol A, all known to leach from packaging into various foods and beverages. The American Chemistry Council and Food Packaging Coalition did not respond to inquiries about releasing hazard information or phasing out known hazardous chemicals.

Increased screening for chronic disease outcomes like diabetes and infertility is also advised. The lack of response from industry trade groups suggests potential resistance to these changes, indicating that regulatory bodies may need to take a more proactive stance. Further research is needed to identify which food and chemical combinations lead to greater chemical migration. The findings are likely to fuel calls for greater transparency from chemical and food-packaging industries and stronger regulatory oversight to ensure the safety of food-contact materials.
