What's Happening?
Telkom Indonesia's international arm, Telin, in collaboration with BW Digital, has successfully launched the Nongsa Changi Cable (NCC), a subsea cable linking Singapore and Indonesia. The 50-km cable, first announced in July 2024, is designed with 24 fiber
pairs to provide over 1.6 petabits per second of new capacity between Changi and Batam. This infrastructure aims to enhance connectivity between data centers in both countries, supporting the growing demand for cloud services, AI, and data center interconnection. The NCC is part of Telin's broader Indonesia Cable Express (ICE) project, which plans to establish seven cable systems by 2028. The project underscores Batam's emerging role as a digital hub, with its data center industry growing 22% year-on-year, surpassing the national average.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the NCC subsea cable is a significant development in strengthening Indonesia's digital infrastructure and connectivity. It enhances the country's position as a key player in the regional digital ecosystem, providing greater route diversity and connectivity for Singapore. This development is crucial for supporting the increasing demand for digital services, including cloud computing and AI, which are vital for modern businesses. The enhanced connectivity is expected to attract more investments in Indonesia's digital sector, boosting economic growth and technological advancement in the region.
What's Next?
The successful deployment of the NCC cable is expected to pave the way for further developments in Indonesia's digital infrastructure. As part of the ICE project, additional cable systems are planned, which will further enhance international connectivity and support the region's digital transformation. Stakeholders, including businesses and government entities, are likely to explore new opportunities for collaboration and investment in the digital sector. The increased connectivity may also lead to the development of new digital services and platforms, fostering innovation and economic growth.
