What's Happening?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has delivered four Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter Mk IIIs to the Indian Coast Guard, increasing their fleet to 16 since deliveries began in 2022. This delivery follows a recent order for six additional helicopters,
signed in March. The Dhruv helicopters are powered by HAL/Safran Shakti-1H1 turboshaft engines, co-developed with the Ardiden 1 turboshaft family. The recent deliveries mark a recovery for the Dhruv model after a challenging year, which included a fatal crash in January 2025 and a subsequent five-month grounding of maritime variants. During this period, HAL addressed issues related to fatigue-induced fractures in the non-rotating swashplate, redesigning the assembly for higher stress tolerances and replacing aluminium booster rods with high-tensile stainless-steel rods.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of these helicopters is significant for the Indian Coast Guard, enhancing their operational capabilities and fleet size. The Dhruv Mk III helicopters are crucial for maritime security and search and rescue operations. The successful resolution of technical issues and the resumption of deliveries demonstrate HAL's commitment to maintaining the reliability and safety of its aircraft. This development also reflects positively on India's aerospace industry, showcasing its ability to produce advanced military equipment and support national defense objectives. The expansion of the Coast Guard's fleet is likely to improve maritime security and operational readiness, which is vital given the strategic importance of India's maritime borders.
What's Next?
With the recent delivery, the Indian Coast Guard is expected to integrate these helicopters into their operations, enhancing their maritime surveillance and search and rescue capabilities. HAL will continue to fulfill the remaining orders, further expanding the Coast Guard's fleet. The focus will likely remain on ensuring the reliability and safety of the helicopters, with ongoing maintenance and support from HAL. The successful deployment of these helicopters could lead to further orders and collaborations, strengthening India's defense manufacturing sector.
