A new coral species, named Laurinque elenya, has been discovered in the deep Pacific waters off Costa Rica, thriving at depths between 360 and 529 meters. This bright yellow, tree-like coral, which can grow over a meter tall, was found abundantly on rocky
seamounts almost entirely covered by brittle stars. Researchers collected specimens during expeditions in 2019 and 2023 using the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian. The coral's unique anatomy and genetic makeup presented a challenge for classification; initial genetic sequencing using common coral classification genes placed it in different, unrelated families. To resolve this, scientists employed phylogenomics, comparing hundreds of genes simultaneously, which ultimately revealed that Laurinque elenya belongs to no previously recognized family. Consequently, a new family, Laurinqueidae, and a new genus, Laurinque, were created to classify it. The name 'Laurinque' is derived from the Quenya word for 'golden tree,' referencing its appearance, while 'elenya' means 'stellar' or 'of the stars,' inspired by the surrounding brittle stars.
