A groundbreaking international study has developed the first framework to estimate the optimal antibiotic needs for countries worldwide. Published in The Lancet Public Health, the study categorizes antibiotics
into 'access', 'watch', and 'reserve' groups, aiming to balance their use based on infection burdens and resistance patterns. The framework, funded by the Wellcome Trust, highlights the overuse of 'watch' antibiotics, which contribute significantly to antibiotic resistance, and the underuse of 'access' and 'reserve' antibiotics in many countries. The study analyzed data from 186 countries, grouping them based on similar healthcare and socioeconomic characteristics to determine optimal antibiotic use. The findings suggest that many countries could improve antibiotic use by reducing unnecessary prescriptions and ensuring access to essential antibiotics.
