The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office in Texas has received approval from county commissioners to purchase 20 new Motorola APX portable two-way radios, costing $176,000. This acquisition is a significant equipment upgrade aimed at improving communication
and safety for deputies. According to Lt. Jonathan Prior, these new radios possess advanced capabilities, including a cellular signal that allows for radio reception in areas where traditional two-way radios might fail. This feature ensures deputies can maintain communication with dispatch and other units even in remote or challenging environments. The radios are also equipped with GPS functionality, enabling deputies to view their exact location on a map directly on the device. This GPS capability also allows dispatch and responding units to track deputies' positions, facilitating faster response times in emergencies. The sheriff's office plans to acquire approximately 30 radios in total, with some already in service and the remainder on order. Each radio will be assigned an ID number, allowing for immediate identification of the transmitting deputy, and they also feature Bluetooth capabilities.
