What's Happening?
The Tinley Park Village Board has amended a six-month moratorium on new business licenses and zoning permits, initially enacted in August. The revised ordinance now allows building owners to replace business tenants if they vacate and permits existing
businesses to relocate, provided they adhere to zoning and use codes. This change comes after business owners expressed concerns about the inability to replace tenants or relocate their businesses. The original moratorium affected 13 types of establishments, including grocery stores, coffee shops, and salons, as part of a broader initiative to align village development with a forthcoming comprehensive plan.
Why It's Important?
The easing of restrictions is significant for local businesses, particularly those with multiple tenants, as it alleviates concerns about maintaining occupancy and operational flexibility. This decision reflects a balance between the village's long-term planning goals and the immediate needs of the business community. By allowing tenant replacement and business relocation, Tinley Park aims to support economic stability and growth while continuing to develop a comprehensive plan that will guide future development. This move could set a precedent for other municipalities facing similar planning and economic challenges.
What's Next?
The comprehensive development plan, known as 'Tinley in Tune,' is expected to be presented to the board within the next month or two. This plan will outline a community-led vision for the next five to ten years, focusing on sustainable growth, a vibrant business community, and enhanced commercial areas. Discussions with the plan commission are anticipated within the next 30 days, which will further refine the village's development strategy and ensure alignment with community needs and identity.
