The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced on Monday that a nuclear reactor under construction in Syria during the Assad era was designed to produce fissile material for potential use in nuclear weapons. Grossi stated
that the reactor's configuration and technical features were highly efficient for producing fissile material directly usable in nuclear weapons. This program was never declared and consistently denied by the Syrian government. Following the ouster of former President Bashar Assad, the new Syrian government granted IAEA inspectors access to previously undeclared sites. During an August visit, inspectors confirmed that the cooling infrastructure at one site was consistent with that of a nuclear reactor. The IAEA also verified the presence of approximately 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal in the form of fuel rods with cladding at a newly disclosed site, which inspectors had to access by 'tearing down walls' and navigating 'difficult and narrow passages' to find the hidden material. This material is now under IAEA safeguards, with cameras installed at the location.
