What's Happening?
The Batavia City Council has approved a construction contract for a new downtown plaza at the site of the former Tin Shop building, which was demolished earlier this year. The contract, awarded to Landmark Contractors, Inc., is valued at approximately
$559,517, with a contingency bringing the total to no more than $618,000. The plaza will feature a variety of amenities, including a public restroom, seating, bike racks, a bike repair station, native pollinator plantings, and public art elements. The project is part of the city's efforts to revitalize the area following the failed One Washington Place project. The construction is set to begin in March or April and is expected to be substantially completed by June. The project is funded through the city's tax increment financing (TIF) District 3.
Why It's Important?
The development of the new downtown plaza is significant for Batavia as it represents a strategic move to enhance community spaces and attract more visitors to the area. By transforming the site of the old Tin Shop building into a vibrant public space, the city aims to boost local economic activity and provide a venue for community events. The inclusion of amenities such as bike racks and a repair station also supports sustainable transportation options. The project is expected to create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors, potentially increasing foot traffic to nearby businesses and contributing to the local economy.
What's Next?
With the construction contract approved, the next steps involve the commencement of construction activities, which are scheduled to start in the coming months. The city will oversee the project's progress to ensure it meets the planned completion timeline. Once the plaza is completed, the Batavia Public Works Department will be responsible for its maintenance. The city may also plan events and activities to inaugurate the new space and encourage community engagement.
