What's Happening?
Zimplats has completed a $360-million smelter expansion and the first phase of a $37-million solar PV power program. The smelter expansion triples Zimplats' capacity, processing 380,000 tons of concentrate annually, supporting local processing and industrialization goals. The solar project provides 8% of Zimplats' energy needs, with plans to increase capacity to 185 MW, eliminating fossil fuel use and reducing carbon footprint.
Why It's Important?
The expansion projects by Zimplats represent a significant advancement in Zimbabwe's industrial capabilities, particularly in the platinum-group metals sector. By enhancing local processing and adopting renewable energy, Zimplats supports national beneficiation goals and positions Zimbabwe as a regional hub for PGMs processing. The solar initiative aligns with global sustainability trends, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting clean energy use.
What's Next?
Zimplats plans further phases of solar expansion and the establishment of a sulphur dioxide abatement plant. These initiatives will enhance environmental sustainability and support agricultural production through fertiliser manufacturing. The company's focus on renewable energy and local capacity building may inspire similar projects in the region, contributing to broader economic and environmental goals.
