What's Happening?
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has partnered with Cagayan State University (CSU) and Utitco Motor Corp. to boost electric mobility in the Philippines. The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for collaboration in research,
development, capacity building, and technology transfer. CSU's Electromobility Research and Development Center has developed innovations like the E-Trike and E-Tranvia, showcasing locally developed transport solutions. Utitco Motors, known for its Model 1-SR electric sports motorcycle, is committed to Filipino engineering and manufacturing. The partnership aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation, with projects like deploying 7,000 electric tricycles in Tuguegarao City and developing electric buses and boats.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is part of the Philippine government's broader effort to promote homegrown technologies and transition to sustainable transportation. With an estimated one million tricycles and eight million motorcycles in use, the potential for electric mobility is significant. The partnership supports the development of electric vehicles, which can reduce carbon emissions and enhance the country's technological capabilities. It also aligns with global trends towards cleaner transportation solutions, positioning the Philippines as a potential leader in electric vehicle innovation.
