What's Happening?
Slippery Rock University's Honors College has inaugurated a new ecotherapy trail and pocket park, funded by a $15,144 Green Fund Grant. The project, spearheaded by Honors College Director Jennifer Wilford and managed by a new sustainability sub-committee,
aims to provide students and the community with a natural space for mental well-being and stress reduction. The pocket park is situated near the Art Sculpture Building, with the trail extending behind the Smith Student Center. Environmental science junior Alyssa Starkey and hospitality and tourism management senior Mary Houk serve as co-chairs for the sustainability subcommittee, responsible for the trail's maintenance, advertising, and proper utilization. The trail features benches, hammock posts, and signs displaying ecotherapy exercises, which will be updated each semester. A significant focus of these exercises is 'forest bathing' (Shinrin-yoku), a Japanese ecotherapy technique. The Honors College plans to host various events on the trail, including yoga, a trail mix bar, reading in the trees, and journaling, all designed to immerse participants in the natural environment.
