The Indian Army has initiated a training program for Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on handling automatic rifles, self-defense, and tactical skills. This initiative is part
of ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the Chenab valley, particularly in the Doda and Kishtwar districts. The training, which includes women volunteers, is being conducted at Shingini panchayat of Balassa, approximately 90 km from Doda district headquarters. The program aims to equip VDGs with the skills necessary to protect their villages and serve as a first line of defense in vulnerable areas. The training complements efforts by the Army, police, and paramilitary forces to neutralize terrorists who have infiltrated the region. VDG members have expressed gratitude for the upgrade from .303 rifles to self-loading rifles (SLRs), which has boosted their confidence.
