What's Happening?
The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE) is investing $300,000 to establish the New MexiCorps Digital Navigator program. This initiative aims to improve digital literacy among residents, particularly in rural, low-income, and older
populations. The program, set to launch this summer, is part of New Mexico's broader digital opportunity strategy outlined in its Three-Year Statewide Broadband Plan. The Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS) will oversee the program, focusing on recruiting, training, and paying digital navigators who will provide one-on-one mentoring and group workshops. This effort is part of a larger push to expand broadband access and digital inclusion across the state.
Why It's Important?
The Digital Navigator program addresses the digital divide, a significant barrier to accessing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. By enhancing digital literacy, New Mexico aims to empower its residents, fostering economic growth and improving quality of life. This initiative is crucial for ensuring that all citizens can participate in the digital economy, particularly as more services move online. The program also reflects a growing recognition of digital skills as essential for modern life, aligning with national efforts to improve digital equity.
What's Next?
As the program rolls out, OBAE will monitor its progress and impact. Success could lead to further investments in digital literacy and broadband infrastructure. The initiative may also serve as a model for other states seeking to bridge the digital divide. Continued collaboration with local libraries and community organizations will be essential for reaching underserved populations and ensuring the program's effectiveness.
