What's Happening?
In 1987, Orlando established a 1,200-acre constructed wetland system to treat reclaimed water. This system now processes approximately 5.11 billion gallons of water each year. The wetlands utilize aquatic plants to remove excess nitrogen and phosphorus
from municipal effluent, effectively polishing the water. However, the system requires regular maintenance to prevent the buildup of organic sediment, which can impede water flow and release stored nutrients back into the water. The City of Orlando Water Reclamation Division conducts periodic demucking operations to remove this sediment, ensuring the wetlands continue to function efficiently. These operations involve draining sections of the wetlands, removing dead vegetation and compacted muck, and replanting native aquatic species.

The constructed wetlands in Orlando represent a sustainable approach to municipal water treatment, combining engineering with natural biological processes. This system not only treats a significant volume of water annually but also provides a habitat for local wildlife. The regular maintenance of the wetlands is crucial to prevent nutrient pollution and maintain their water-cleaning capabilities.
