An international team of scientists, led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, has discovered a novel approach to accelerate the healing of chronic wounds infected by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The study, conducted in collaboration with
the University of Geneva, focused on Enterococcus faecalis, a bacterium that impedes wound healing by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). This process activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) in skin cells, hindering their ability to repair wounds. The researchers identified extracellular electron transport (EET) as a key mechanism in this process. By neutralizing the ROS with antioxidants like catalase, the team was able to restore the healing capabilities of skin cells. This discovery offers a potential therapeutic strategy for chronic wounds, which are a significant health challenge globally, affecting millions and often leading to amputations.
