What's Happening?
Civil organizations in Budapest held a demonstration to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The event, attended by approximately 200 people, called for an end to the aggression. Despite Hungary's political alignment
with Russia, many Ukrainians in Hungary report feeling welcomed. The Budapest City Council and Ukraine's embassy in Budapest also held a joint commemoration, where Ukraine's ambassador, Sándor Fegyir, highlighted Russia's violations of international law. Mayor Gergely Karácsony emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine, criticizing the ruling Fidesz party's stance. An outdoor exhibition in Budapest further commemorates the war's victims.
Why It's Important?
The demonstration underscores the ongoing tension between Hungary's political stance and public sentiment regarding the Ukraine conflict. Hungary's government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has often been criticized for its close ties with Russia, which contrasts with the support shown by Hungarian citizens towards Ukrainian refugees. This event highlights the complex dynamics within Hungary, where public opinion may not align with governmental policies. The situation also reflects broader European concerns about Russia's actions and the need for solidarity with Ukraine, impacting EU policies and international relations.
