What's Happening?
Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina (BHSM) has successfully completed a multi-barge roll-on operation using its 500-ton floating dry dock, 'Providence.' The barges, constructed by Blue Atlantic Fabricators, are designed to serve as docks at the Massachusetts
Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) ferry terminal in Hingham. Each barge measures 115 feet by 30 feet and weighs approximately 120 tons. The project, awarded to Blue Atlantic in February 2025, aims to improve the rider experience and ensure compliance with updated accessibility standards. The operation involved rolling the barges from the fabrication shop onto the dry dock using self-propelled modular transporters, followed by a controlled submersion of the dry dock to float the barges. This collaborative effort involved several partners, including Bay Crane Northeast, ACK Marine, A. Waller Associates, and JMS Naval Architects, ensuring a safe and efficient process.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it represents a major investment in water transportation infrastructure in Massachusetts, particularly enhancing the MBTA ferry services. The new docks are expected to improve the daily commute for thousands of passengers by providing more accessible and efficient ferry services. This project underscores the importance of collaboration between various engineering and construction entities to achieve complex maritime operations. The successful launch of these barges not only highlights the capabilities of the Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina but also sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects aimed at improving public transportation systems.
What's Next?
Following the successful launch, the focus will likely shift to the integration of these new docks into the existing ferry terminal operations. Stakeholders, including the MBTA and local government, may monitor the impact on commuter satisfaction and operational efficiency. Future projects may be inspired by this successful collaboration, potentially leading to further enhancements in water transportation infrastructure across the region. Additionally, there may be ongoing assessments to ensure the docks meet all safety and accessibility standards as they become operational.
