What's Happening?
Finland's Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) program, managed by Visit Finland, provides a structured framework for tourism companies to develop and measure sustainability practices. Since its launch in 2020,
the program has seen participation from 1,436 tourism companies, with 431 earning the STF label. The program emphasizes environmental, socio-cultural, and economic sustainability, requiring third-party certification and continuous improvement. By consolidating sustainability standards, STF helps travelers and industry stakeholders identify responsible tourism providers.
Why It's Important?
The STF program positions Finland as a leader in sustainable tourism, promoting responsible travel practices that benefit the environment and local communities. By setting clear sustainability criteria, the program encourages tourism companies to adopt practices that reduce their environmental impact and support cultural preservation. This approach not only enhances Finland's appeal as a travel destination but also contributes to global efforts to promote sustainable tourism.
What's Next?
As more companies participate in the STF program, Finland aims to further integrate sustainability into its tourism industry. The program's success could inspire other countries to adopt similar frameworks, promoting responsible travel on a global scale. Continued support and visibility from Visit Finland will be crucial in maintaining momentum and encouraging more companies to commit to sustainable practices.
