Toyota has taken another important step in its global electric vehicle (EV) journey by launching the Urban Cruiser Electric SUV in Europe. The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is a compact electric SUV, designed
mainly for city use but capable enough for longer trips as well. It is closely related to the Suzuki e-Vitara, which is developed under Toyota and Suzuki’s global partnership. In India, Suzuki products are sold via Maruti Suzuki, which is why this new EV has caught the attention of Indian buyers.
For now, Toyota has launched this electric SUV only in Europe. However, its size, design, and features seem well-suited for markets like India, where compact SUVs are extremely popular.
Toyota is offering the Urban Cruiser EV with two battery options. The smaller 49 kWh battery is ideal for daily city driving, while the larger 61 kWh battery is meant for buyers who want more range and flexibility.

The 61 kWh version delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 426 km, which means fewer charging stops and better peace of mind. Fast charging is supported too and Toyota claims the battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 45 minutes using a DC fast charger.
However, the power varies by version like-
- 49 kWh (FWD): 142 bhp, 193 Nm
- 61 kWh (FWD): 171 bhp, 193 Nm
- 61 kWh (AWD): 181 bhp, 307 Nm
Dimension-wise, the Urban Cruiser EV sits right in the heart of the compact SUV segment. It competes with electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta EV, from Hyundai, and the upcoming Suzuki e-Vitara.
Design elements include sharp LED headlamps, muscular wheel arches, clean tail lamps, and a sporty rear spoiler. Inside, the cabin feels modern and tech-focused, which features a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, smartphone connectivity and app-based remote functions. The sliding and split rear seats make it practical for families and luggage needs.
Toyota has equipped the Urban Cruiser EV with a strong safety package, including lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Toyota has not officially confirmed an India launch yet. However, considering India’s fast-growing EV market and Toyota’s close partnership with Suzuki, the Urban Cruiser EV makes a lot of sense for our roads. If launched, local assembly and localisation will be crucial to keep prices competitive.
