The new BMW X5 has hit the global shores in its fifth-generation guise, and what has truly made it stand out is the availability of five distinct powertrain options. Buyers have the freedom to choose between petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and even hydrogen fuel-cell technology. This is a huge milestone for the German marque as not only does it make the X5 the most versatile SUV in its lineup, but it also expands the brand's approach towards a multi-energy strategy while incorporating technologies from BMW's Neue Klasse platform. The new X5 is scheduled to enter production in August 2026, with deliveries of combustion-engine models beginning later in the year, while electric and plug-in hybrid versions will follow in early
2027. The launch of the SUV in India is yet to be confirmed.
BMW X5 2027 Design
The new X5 has the same proportions as it had earlier, but now the design is more modern as it embraces BMW's new Neue Klasse-inspired styling for an upright appearance. The look has become captivating as illuminated kidney grilles and new 'double-X' signature lighting elements debut. From the side, cleaner body lines and flush-style electrically operated door handles add to the modern appearance. Customers will have a choice of eleven exterior colours and alloy wheels measuring up to 23 inches. BMW will also offer M Sport and M Sport Pro packages, while the flagship X5 M60e xDrive gets exclusive styling upgrades. Buyers looking for an even sportier appearance can opt for M Performance accessories, including carbon-fibre exterior elements, aerodynamic upgrades and exclusive wheel designs.
The interior now has a minimalistic layout and premium materials. The use of slate trim makes BMW the first automaker to offer the natural material as an interior decorative finish. The SUV also introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X, with a full-width windscreen projection display, a new central touchscreen, optional passenger display, and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel. Ambient lighting is also included.
BMW X5 2027 Powertrain
As stated earlier, the BMW X5 is the first bimmer to come with five powertrains. Petrol and diesel variants will continue to be offered with 48V mild-hybrid technology. Buyers can also opt for plug-in hybrid versions. The all-new BMW iX5 becomes the first fully electric X5 and debuts sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. It uses an 800V electrical architecture, supports faster charging and bidirectional charging. It also features newly developed cylindrical battery cells. BMW claims the iX5 60 xDrive can have a range of up to 845 kilometres on a single charge.
BMW is also preparing the production version of the iX5 Hydrogen, making it the brand's first hydrogen-powered production vehicle. It uses a third-generation fuel-cell system, newly developed hydrogen storage technology and a dedicated high-voltage battery. According to BMW, the hydrogen-powered SUV is expected to offer a range of up to 750 kilometres.
