BMW has announced that production of its Z4 roadster will conclude next year, marking the end of an era for the German automaker. For the first time in three decades, BMW will not offer a two-seat sports car, with orders for the Z4 already closed in the UK ahead of its discontinuation. The current Z4 generation, introduced in 2018, shares its platform with the Toyota A90 Supra, which also ended production earlier this year.
The Z4 traces its lineage back to the Z3, launched in 1995. Over the years, it evolved through multiple generations, earning a loyal following for its combination of style, handling, and everyday usability. Despite this, the Z4 struggled to match the sales and performance of rivals such as the Porsche Boxster, often being
seen as a softer alternative rather than a true high-performance sports car.

BMW executives have hinted at the possibility of a new roadster based on the upcoming Neue Klasse platform, though no official plans have been confirmed. Production of the Z4 has moved over the years. The original Z3 was built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States, but later generations, including the current model, were produced at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, alongside the Toyota Supra.
BMW faces challenges in determining the future of its two-seat sports cars. Demand for sports electric vehicles remains limited. BMW may initially pursue internal combustion engine options for any new Z4 before exploring electric variants. The high development cost of low-volume roadsters remains a key consideration.
