India is getting ready to take the next big leap in road safety as the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), which is the country’s own car crash testing system, is set to become more advanced
with its next version ‘Bharat NCAP 2.0’.
This new phase will include tougher crash tests and smarter dummies to make sure that cars sold in India are truly safe for adults as well as children inside them.
Bharat NCAP which was introduced in October 2023, allows carmakers to voluntarily send their cars for crash testing and based on how a car performs, it gets a star rating out of 5 for adult and child safety. Till date 24 cars have been tested and the results have already made a big impact as the customers are now more aware of safety ratings when buying new cars.
According to Autocar, with Bharat NCAP 2.0, the testing system is going to become even more advanced and detailed. According to official sources as quoted by Autocar, the new version is expected to roll out by late 2027. The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) which is one of the key testing agencies has already confirmed that the infrastructure for this new phase is ready.

What’s New in Bharat NCAP 2.0?
Currently, the Bharat NCAP tests include:
- Front offset crash test - where 40% of the car’s front crashes into a deformable barrier
- Side crash test
- Side pole crash test, which checks how well the car protects passengers during a side impact or accident.
In Bharat NCAP 2.0, two new crash tests will be added to make the process more realistic and impactful:
- Full frontal crash test: This will not include just part of the car’s front being tested, but the entire front section will be involved which will give a clearer picture of how the car absorbs impact in a head-on collision.
- Rear crash impact test: This one will check how well the car protects passengers when hit from behind. This is a scenario often ignored but is common in real-world accidents.
Moreover, the new version will also use technically advanced crash-test dummies that can capture more accurate data about how a human body reacts in a crash and these dummies will be used in the side pole impact test as well to gather detailed safety insights.
Why is it important?
The Bharat NCAP is part of a major push to make cars safer and encourage automakers to meet higher safety standards, and with the new crash tests, consumers will be able to make better-informed choices when buying four wheelers, not just based on looks or mileage, but on how well they actually protect lives.
