Tesla, Elon Musk’s EV brand, is finally making its presence in the Indian market. The American EV giant has started deliveries of its first model in India, the Tesla Model Y, and has already delivered
over 60 units in September 2025.
The Model Y which was launched on July 15, 2025, has immediately captured the attention of Indian buyers. Even though Tesla is selling just one model right now, the company has already received over 600 bookings within two months of launch which is not a bad start for a brand new entrant in India’s luxury car market.

According to official Vahan data, traditional luxury carmakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz still lead the EV race with 307 and 95 units sold, respectively, in the same month. Even Volvo managed 22 electric car sales. But Tesla’s 60 units which are priced around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom) per unit show that the brand is beginning to make an impression, especially considering its late entry, limited network and just one model in India as of now.
The Tesla Model Y comes in two variants- the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version which offers around 500 km range, and the Long Range version with up to 622 km range (WLTP). For now, only the RWD variant has started deliveries, while customers eagerly wait for the longer-range version as well.

Despite the excitement, Tesla’s early numbers are slightly below expectations. Though the company had hoped to sell its full import quota of 2,500 units this year, but slower-than-expected demand has led Tesla to revise its goal to just 350–500 deliveries by the end of 2025.
Still, Tesla’s arrival marks a big moment for India’s EV journey, as with its cutting-edge design, smart technology and Musk’s global fan following, the Model Y could open the way for more Tesla models and more electric excitement on Indian roads soon.
