The Tata Harrier and Tata Safari have received new top-spec Ultra and Red Dark diesel variants, expanding the lineup with more features and cosmetic upgrades. What’s new is the introduction of these premium trims for diesel buyers, with prices starting at Rs 23.85 lakh (ex-showroom). This update matters because earlier, the Ultra trim and Red Dark styling were limited to petrol versions. Now, diesel buyers, who form a significant share in this segment, get access to the same top-end configuration without compromise.
Price, Variants And What’s New
The newly introduced Ultra diesel variants are positioned at the top of the Tata Harrier and Safari range. Prices start at Rs 23.85 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Harrier Ultra diesel manual and go up to around Rs 24.50 lakh for the Safari Ultra diesel (7-seater,
ex-showroom).
These variants extend the Ultra and Red Dark editions, previously offered only on petrol models, to diesel powertrains. The Red Dark edition combines an all-black theme with red accents and a distinctive exterior finish, while the Ultra trim focuses on adding more features and tech.
For buyers, this means access to a fully loaded diesel SUV straight from the factory, rather than opting for mid-spec variants or aftermarket upgrades.
Features And Interior Upgrades
The Ultra variants bring a noticeable jump in equipment. Key highlights include a 14.5-inch Harman infotainment system powered by Samsung Neo QLED technology along with a Dolby Atmos-supported audio setup.
Other additions include a digital inside rear-view mirror (E-IRVM) with integrated dashcam and DVR, memory ORVMs with auto reverse dip and a dual-camera washer system designed to improve visibility. Built-in navigation using Mappls Auto is also part of the package.
In real-world terms, these upgrades focus on convenience and in-cabin experience rather than performance changes. The Red Dark edition adds visual differentiation, while the Ultra trim bundles these features into a single top-spec offering.

Engine, Positioning And Buyer Impact
Both SUVs continue with the same 2.0-litre diesel engine, producing around 170 hp and 350 Nm, paired with manual and automatic transmission options. There are no mechanical updates with this launch, keeping performance unchanged.
The focus is clearly on expanding the feature set and improving top-end value. Diesel remains a preferred choice in this segment for long-distance usage and torque-heavy driving, and this update ensures those buyers don’t miss out on premium trims.
For the Indian market, the move reflects a clear trend. Buyers are increasingly opting for higher variants with more features, and manufacturers are responding by offering fully equipped trims across fuel types rather than limiting them to select versions.
