Honda Cars India has faced a tougher start to 2026, as the brand has faced decline in sales in January. The company reported 6,941 passenger vehicles sold in January 2026 (domestic sales plus exports). That’s a steep 43.58 percent drop compared to 12,304 units sold in January 2025. For new readers, this means Honda sold 5,363 fewer cars this January than it did a year ago.
Honda’s domestic sales stood at 6,193 units in January 2026, down 15.45 percent from 7,325 units last year. This indicates that showroom demand inside India has softened, but not collapsed. The real shock came from exports. Honda shipped just 748 units overseas this January, compared to 4,979 units a year ago, which is 84.97 percent fall. In simple terms, the export pipeline that once supported Honda’s volumes has almost dried up for now.
Despite the fall, Honda says some of its core models continue to attract buyers like Honda Amaze remains a strong value-for-money
choice in the compact sedan space, Honda City continues to enjoy loyal demand from sedan buyers and Honda Elevate is steadily contributing to volumes in the SUV segment.

Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing & Sales at Honda Cars India, described the start of the year as being supported by “healthy sales momentum,” highlighting consistent interest in these models and expressing confidence for the months ahead.
Honda is a brand with a long-standing reputation in India for reliability, smooth petrol engines, and comfortable cars. However, the market has rapidly shifted toward SUVs, feature-rich cabins, and aggressive pricing from competitors.
While the Elevate helped Honda re-enter the SUV race, the company’s portfolio is still smaller compared to rivals who now offer multiple SUVs across price points. The export collapse also suggests changing global demand patterns or supply adjustments, which have magnified the impact on monthly numbers.
For Honda, January 2026 is less about panic and more about recalibration. Domestic demand hasn’t vanished, but the brand clearly needs fresh momentum, either through new products, updates, or sharper positioning in the SUV-heavy market. For buyers, Honda’s core strengths remain intact. For the company, the challenge is turning those strengths into stronger numbers in the months to come.
