Land Rover Discovery Sport To Be Discontinued After 11 Years; Production Ends In 2026

Land Rover will end production of the Discovery Sport in December 2026, bringing an 11-year run for the premium SUV to a close. Introduced in 2014 as the replacement for the Freelander, the Discovery Sport has been part of the brand's global portfolio for over a decade and has also been sold in India. The decision comes as Jaguar Land Rover restructures its future model line-up and shifts investment towards next-generation electric vehicles. While production has a confirmed timeline, the company has not announced a direct successor or shared detailed replacement plans.

Why Is The Discovery Sport Being Phased Out?

The Land Rover Discovery Sport has received several updates since its global debut including revised styling, upgraded infotainment as well as electrified powertrains. However,

like most vehicles it has now reached the end of its product lifecycle.

According to multiple reports, production at Jaguar Land Rover's Halewood plant in the UK will conclude in December 2026. The move is part of the company's wider strategy to simplify its portfolio as it prepares for a larger electric vehicle range under the House of Brands approach.

Land Rover has not confirmed what will replace the Discovery Sport which leaves its future plans for this segment open.

What Did The SUV Offer?

The Discovery Sport was positioned as the entry point to Land Rover's Discovery family. In several global markets, it was available with an optional third row which makes it one of the few premium SUVs in its class to offer seven-seat flexibility.

Depending on the market, buyers could choose from petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The SUV also featured Land Rover's Terrain Response system, all-wheel drive on selected variants along with Pivi Pro infotainment system introduced during its mid-life update.

In India, the Discovery Sport has been offered with both petrol and diesel engines and competes with rivals such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 as well as Volvo XC60.

What Does This Mean For Buyers?

The production announcement does not affect existing owners in the immediate future. Jaguar Land Rover will continue to provide service support and spare parts in line with its aftersales commitments.

For prospective buyers, the Discovery Sport will remain available in markets where it is still on sale until production ends and dealer inventory is exhausted.

More importantly, the move shows the direction Jaguar Land Rover is taking. As the company expands its electric vehicle portfolio, older combustion-powered models are gradually being retired. The Discovery Sport's production end marks another step in that transition, closing the chapter on a model that remained in Land Rover's line-up for more than a decade.
