Toyota globally unveiled the latest generation of its renowned Hilux pickup truck on November 10 in Thailand. The much-anticipated pickup has not only changed in its design but has also arrived in an all-electric avatar, creating a lot of excitement. Just like the ICE version, the electric Hilux also offers all-wheel drive, ladder-on frame chassis and a rugged appearance but its practicality might be questionable based on its current specs. Here is Why.

The new Toyota Hilux Electric comes with a 59.2 kWh battery pack, which gives it a WLTP claimed range of just 240 km. Moreover, real-world estimates would be 15-20 percent lower than the 240 km figure,
based on the historical difference between WLTP figures and real-world range returns across EV segments. This puts the Hilux Electric at a big disadvantage even before it starts rolling out in December 2025, ahead of an expected India debut in 2026. Here are five Made-in-India EVs that offer better claimed range figures than the Hilux EV for under Rs 20 lakh ex-showroom.
1. Tata Tiago EV - Up To 315 Km Range
Formerly the most affordable EV in the country, the Tiago EV is offered in two different battery packs. The smaller 19.2 kWh battery pack offers a claimed MIDC range of 223 km for the Medium Range battery pack and 293 km for the Long Range battery pack option. Prices range between Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 11.14 lakh ex-showroom.
2. Mahindra XUV400 EV - Up To 456 Km Range
The XUV400 EV also offers two battery pack options that offer a much higher range than the Hilux's 240 km. The lower, 34.5 kWh battery pack offers an MIDC claimed range of 359 km and the higher 39.4 kWh battery pack claims 456 km of range. Prices range between Rs 15.49 lakh ex-showroom.
3. MG Windsor EV - Up To 449 Km Range
One of the top-selling Electric Cars in recent times, the MG Windsor is a comfortable people mover that is suitable for both highway rides and city runs. The Windsor is also available in two different battery packs. The standard Windsor EV with a 38 kWh battery offers an MIDC claimed range of 38 kWh and the Windsor EV Pro claims 449 km out of the bigger 52.9 kWh battery pack. Prices range between Rs 12 lakh to Rs 15.85 lakh e-x-showroom.
4. Hyundai Creta Electric - Up To 510 Km Range
The Creta Electric is another contestant in India's growing crop of practical and powerful electric cars that come under the Rs 20 lakh budget. Once again, this Made-in-India electric is available in two battery packs and both variants offer a realistic driving range. The Creta Electric's 42 kWh battery pack has a claimed MIDC range of 420 km and the larger 51.4 kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of 510 km. Prices start from Rs 18.02 lakh ex-showroom.
5. Mahindra BE 6 - Up To 683 Km Range
Perhaps among the most premium domestically manufactured EVs, the Mahindra BE 6 offers a claimed range of between 557 km to 683 km, depending upon the variant and battery pack. Even in its base PACK ONE variant, the BE 6 offers 557 km of MIDC-certified range. It has a starting price of Rs 19.65 lakh ex-showroom.
While fans of the Toyota Hilux might argue about the lack of claimed range based on the pickup's size and off-road capability. It still means that the Hilux Electric, with its current capacity, is not an alternative for buyers of the ICE Hilux or other lifestyle SUV enthusiasts. With the current model priced between Rs 28.02 lakh to Rs 38.85 lakh ex-showroom, the EV version is bound to charge a premium over the existing ICE version.
