The Renault Kwid has once again been spotted in a fresh set of spy shots on the Indian roads. Following this, there is much speculation among keen observers as to whether this model carries an internal
combustion engine (ICE) or happens to be the much-awaited fully electric version. The latest images speak of a facelifted front end that gets LED DRLs, halogen headlamps, and a new grille design—no confirmed signs of EV parts under the skin yet. Some details point toward it being a petrol variant; however, the fact that Renault is still working on a Kwid EV is enough to keep the rumours afloat.

Visual Clues Leaning Toward ICE
This test mule carries over features typically associated with regular combustion variants. Halogen headlamps and a standard front grille seem to suggest that it runs on petrol power. Its side profile goes with the well-known Kwid design, showing squared wheel arches, flap-type door handles, and steel wheels with covers. A very faint exhaust pipe seen in some spy shots greatly strengthens the idea that this is indeed an ICE version. The changes in design—new bumpers and better lighting are more of a facelift than a total change in the powertrain. Still, none of these pictures prove any EV parts like a charging port, battery layout, or fully sealed front end.
EV Ambitions Remain On The Table
Renault is reportedly working on the Kwid EV based on the Dacia Spring EV. The latter is driven by a 26.8 kWh battery, and earlier speculation suggested that the battery pack could also drive the future Kwid EV from India. Renault has not confirmed whether both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions will be available, or if the Kwid will be entirely transitioned to electric power.
Looking at the latest trends in the auto industry and the regulatory environment, Renault may decide to hold back the launch of the EV version until it can get cheaper batteries, optimal charging infrastructure as well as greater market demand in its target regions.

What This Means Going Forward
At present, the spy images favour an upgraded petrol variant of the Kwid rather than a full EV debut. But Renault’s EV plans for the hatch are far from dead. These tests may represent interim updates while groundwork continues for a future electric version. As more detailed spy images or leaks emerge, clarity about the Kwid’s direction should surface.
