The founder-CEO of Paytm, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, has taken delivery of a Tesla Model Y, making him one of India’s latest high-profile EV adopters. After nearly a decade of anticipation, Sharma’s new ride
signifies more than just a luxury purchase: it reflects growing confidence in electric mobility among India’s tech and startup elite. With delivery from a brand-new Tesla centre in Gurugram, this purchase draws attention not only for its high-end badge but also for the features, pricing, and symbolism tied to India’s emerging EV landscape.

Long-Pending Dream Comes True
Sharma was among the earliest Indians to reserve a Tesla. He booked the globally marketed Tesla Model 3 back in 2016 when the company first accepted bookings. That plan was eventually shelved when Tesla delayed its India rollout. Nearly nine years later, Tesla’s 2025 entry into the Indian market through the Model Y has fulfilled that long-standing aspiration.
Tesla Model Y: Price And Range
The Model Y that Sharma bought comes in two variants: rear-wheel drive (RWD) base version priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), and a Long-Range RWD variant at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
The standard version delivers a claimed WLTP range of 500 km, while the Long-Range variant offers up to 661 km per charge. Both variants promise brisk acceleration, strong battery performance, and access to Tesla’s growing Supercharger network across India.
Tesla Model Y: Features
Features include a large central touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and driver-assist functionalities. For EV owners like Sharma, such kit offers a blend of performance, comfort, and tech-forward driving experience, which is a significant step up from traditional ICE vehicles.
Why This Matters For India’s EV Narrative
Sharma’s purchase arrives at a time when EV adoption in India is slowly gaining momentum, backed by growing charging infrastructure and regulatory thrust. His move sends a strong signal to the startup community, tech entrepreneurs, and affluent buyers that electric mobility is not just for early adopters, it is viable for everyday use too.

What Lies Ahead
With Tesla now operating a full-service facility in Gurugram, including delivery, sales, service, and charging, accessibility for high-end EV buyers is improving. As more influential buyers like Vijay Shekhar Sharma go electric, other potential buyers may find both the confidence and the infrastructure to follow. If Tesla can maintain delivery timelines and after-sales support, the Model Y and future Tesla models, could reshape the premium EV segment in India.
