Tata Motors has delivered reassuring news for SUV buyers in India, especially those who are new to cars but place high importance on safety, as the petrol variants of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari have officially received a five-star safety rating under Bharat NCAP, which is India’s own vehicle crash test programme. This rating was earlier awarded only to the diesel versions, but it now fully applies to the petrol models as well.
The Safety Ratings extended to the newly introduced variants of TATA SAFARI / HARRIER Gasoline

Bharat NCAP is a system that crash-tests
cars sold in India and rates them on how well they protect passengers during accidents. A five-star rating is the highest score possible and indicates excellent safety.
Tata Motors has clarified that the petrol Harrier and Safari are just as safe as their diesel counterparts because both versions use the same body structure and safety systems. In easy terms, only the engine has changed, but the strength of the car and its safety features remain exactly the same.
According to official Bharat NCAP data from tests conducted in December 2023, both the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari scored same results across diesel and petrol versions. The SUVs achieved 30.08 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection and 44.54 out of 49 points for Child Occupant Protection.
These scores show that both SUVs offer strong protection to adults as well as children during frontal and side crashes. With the petrol variants now included, buyers can confidently choose petrol without worrying about compromised safety.

Tata Harrier and Safari come packed with safety features that are useful not just in crashes, but also in daily driving. Six airbags are standard, while higher variants offer seven airbags. Every seat gets a three-point seatbelt along with seatbelt reminders, which is especially important for families.
For parents, ISOFIX child seat mounts are provided as standard, which makes it easier and safer to install child seats. The seatbelts also come with advanced components like pretensioners and load limiters that reduce injury during an impact.
Higher variants go a step further by offering Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and more, which are the technologies that can help prevent accidents before they happen.
Until now, the Harrier and Safari were sold only with a diesel engine. The new petrol versions use a 1.5-litre TGDi turbo-petrol engine producing 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox. While pricing is yet to be announced, the petrol option is expected to attract buyers who prefer quieter driving and lower running complexity.
