The mid-size SUV segment in India is one of the most competitive and two names that often come up in buyer conversations are the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Hyundai Creta. Both are five-seater
SUVs, both are feature-rich, and both come from brands known for reliability. Yet, they appeal to slightly different kinds of buyers. Let's have a look at the key difference.
Design and Road Presence
The Hyundai Creta has a bold and modern design that immediately stands out. Its sharp LED lighting, wide grille and sporty stance give it strong road presence, especially in newer trims like the Knight and N Line editions. The Toyota Hyryder, on the other hand, looks cleaner and more mature. It may not shout for attention, but its SUV proportions, high bonnet and clean lines give it a premium, urban feel.
Engines and Performance
This is where the biggest difference lies. The Toyota Hyryder offers three powertrain choices, which are- a strong hybrid, a mild-hybrid petrol and a CNG option. The highlight is the strong hybrid, which delivers an impressive 27.97 kmpl, making it one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its class. It is smooth, quiet and ideal for city users who want low running costs.
The Hyundai Creta focuses more on performance variety. It comes with petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines. The turbo-petrol version, with around 160 PS, is easily the most powerful option here and feels quick on highways. Mileage ranges between 17.4 and 21.8 kmpl, which is respectable but not hybrid-level efficient.

Features and Comfort
Both SUVs are well-equipped. The Hyryder offers ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, 360-degree camera and wireless charging. Toyota has also added new tech packages in 2026 to boost its value.
The Creta, however, goes a step further in tech. It gets dual 10.25-inch screens, a Bose premium sound system, ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control and voice commands. Its cabin feels more tech-heavy and flashy, which many buyers love.
Safety and Technology
Toyota has standardised six airbags across the Hyryder range, along with ESC, TPMS and all-wheel disc brakes. The Creta also offers six airbags as standard, but its big advantage is Level 2 ADAS, which includes lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
Space and Practicality
The Creta is slightly wider and offers a larger 433-litre boot, making it more practical for family trips. The Hyryder’s boot space is smaller in the hybrid version due to battery placement, though ground clearance is higher at 210 mm, useful on rough roads.
Price and Final Verdict
The Hyryder starts at Rs 10,94,800 (ex-showroom), while the Creta starts at Rs 10.79 lakh and goes up depending on engine and trim.
Choose the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder if fuel efficiency, hybrid technology and long-term running costs matter most. Go for the Hyundai Creta if you want stronger performance, advanced driver assistance features and a more tech-loaded cabin. Both are excellent SUVs, the right choice depends on what you value more.
